A tabla, tanpura and swarmandal that practise with you

Pick a taal, set your Sa, press play. Or just start singing, and let it find your Sa for you.

Follow Voice

Nobody sings a reference tone before riyaz. They just start. Sangat listens, works out the Sa you are actually singing in from the shape of the melody, and tunes the tanpura and tabla to it.

It waits for a few settled seconds before it moves anything, and once it has locked on it stays there rather than chasing every phrase. Then it plays your take back on a harmonium — your notes, your pauses, your pacing.

Recorded, or modelled

A sampler and a synthesiser fail in opposite directions. A sampled tabla is recorded at one pitch and stretched towards yours, which drags the whole timbre with it. A modelled one is right at every pitch and never quite has the grain of a struck skin.

So Sangat carries both. The instruments speak with real recordings by default — tabla strokes, tanpura plucks, plucked strings — re-pitched on the device to the Sa you chose. One switch per instrument gives you the physical models instead: the dayan's near-harmonic modes, the tanpura's buzzing jawari bridge, the swarmandal's stiffer strings, each rendered at your exact pitch. If a recording will not decode on a particular phone, the app falls back to synthesis on its own rather than going quiet.

Either way it all ships inside the app. There is nothing to download and it works in aeroplane mode.

What it does not do

No advertising, and no account to practise. Free is a complete daily instrument — the whole tanpura, ten starter taals, Find my Sa listening — and Sangat Pro is the depth: every taal, every raga, Find my Sa applied, unlimited sessions, one membership on every device. The only thing the app ever sends anywhere is the optional account, which holds your email and your membership and can be deleted from Settings. See the privacy policy, which is short.

Credits

The recorded instruments are used under Creative Commons and Pixabay licences. The tabla strokes are CC0 recordings by the freesound user dio_333, obtained via the Sonic Pi sample library; the tanpura plucks are CC0 and Pixabay-licensed; the swarmandal's plucked strings are harp notes by Nicholaus P. Brosowsky (tonejs-instruments), used under CC BY 3.0.

The credits for every recording, and for the open-source software the app is built on, are in the notices — and in the app itself, under Settings.
